Canadian National operates a network of almost 18,000 route miles of track in Canada and the United States, generating revenues from the movement of a diversified and balanced portfolio of petroleum and chemicals, grain and fertilizers, coal, metals and minerals, forest products, intermodal and automotive.

CN is geographically well positioned to take full advantage of the growing trade within the North American economy. It is the only transcontinental railroad in North America whose network spans Canada and mid-America, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico, serving the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, B.C., Montreal, Halifax, New Orleans, and Mobile, Ala., and the key cities of Toronto, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Duluth, Minn./Superior, Wis., Green Bay, Wis., Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, St. Louis, and Jackson, Miss., with connections to all point in North America.

Fifty-eight percent of the company's revenues come from transborder and domestic U.S. traffic, 24% from Canadian domestic traffic, and 18% from overseas traffic, primarily to Asia and Pacific Rim countries.

CN's 23,000 employees generated in 2003 $5.8 billion Cdn. in annual revenue.

Highlights of Our Sustainable Development Performance:

Sustainable development provides us with a framework for solutions to issues such as climate change and drives our effort to be the most fuel-efficient mode of transportation. Our work includes:

  • Setting performance data and targets for GHG emissions. To this end,CN will apply targets set in a MOU with Environment Canada to measure, monitor and report on its emissions. The rail transportation sector has produced 3.5 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions in 2000 than they did in 1990, while hauling almost 30 per cent more traffic than a decade ago;
  • Developing a protocol for measuring, monitoring and publicly reporting emissions based on negotiations with Transport Canada;
  • Reducing our emissions of NOx and CO2 by 30% since 1990 while increasing the amount of freight moved (NTM) in the same time period by 30%. This was achieved through the introduction of new, higher powered locomotives, improved train handling and improved productivity practices. CN is continuing its work to further improve its fuel efficiency; and,
  • Being the first carrier in North America to join both CCPA and ACC Responsible Care initiatives.
Social Responsibility
  • CN is a committed 'Imagine Caring Company' contributing one per cent of pre-tax profit to registered, not-for-profit organizations in North America. Imagine is Canada's national program to promote public and corporate giving, volunteering and support for the community.
  • In 2003, CN and the Safe Communities Foundation of Canada received the Imagine "New Spirit of Community" Partnership Award in recognition of their joint efforts to improve safety in a number of communities. Imagine is Canada's national program to promote public and corporate giving, volunteering and support for the community.
  • CN seeks to promote a harmonious working relationship with the many Aboriginal communities along its rights-of-way across Canada. A series of policy guidelines spell out the company's commitment to dealing fairly with the many Aboriginal communities along its rail lines. CN actively encourages two-way communication, cross-cultural training, safety awareness, and conflict resolution between its employees and members of First Nations.
  • CN makes awards available to Inuit, status or non-status Indians orMtis students entering or enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program in Canada that leads to a career in the transportation industry. This includes fields such as engineering, business, computer science, communications and technical studies.
  • CN encourages women to pursue non-traditional careers in areas such as trades, technology and operations. To date, participation by women in these fields has been limited. This is a special CN initiative aimed at promoting employment equity in Canada. Scholarships are awarded annually to women in selected community colleges and institutes of technology across Canada.
  • CN created a formal Code of Business Conduct for employees in 2003, establishing a set of clear objectives that include helping CN people promote best practices; instilling trust and honesty into the work environment; preserving corporate integrity; and, running the railroad and all aspects of its business in a safe and efficient way.
